Understand something; the towing component of most companies’ roadside assistance plan is serviced through a 3rd party. This quite honestly is not ideal for emergency situations. It’s ideal if you have plenty of time on your hands and your car is in your driveway. But when it’s truly an emergency, that 3rd party is not gonna work for the man or woman who’s time is money. If you’ve used a Roadside Assistance company before, you probably had somewhere in the neighborhood of a 90 minute wait or more before the tow truck arrived.
Here’s How Roadside Assistance Typically Works
Your car is stalled, or you have a flat tire, or your engine is overheating, and you call your Roadside Assistance company. Once you make this call, they then start the fishing process of trying to locate a towing company that has an available truck to service your call. They have already negotiated this price and/or rate with the towing company. That price is usually barely enough to keep that company’s trucks running. Even though the towing company has a contract with the Roadside Assistance company, the towing company doesn’t have to take that call. On a busy day, towing companies make roadside assistance calls their lowest priority. The current high fuel prices make the towing companies even less incentivized to take these types of calls. This is why you may end up on the side of the road for hours waiting for so-called “emergency” roadside assistance.

Check Your Insurance
Many aren’t aware that towing may be included with your insurance premiums. Check with your insurance company. Many give you a full or partial reimbursement on towing. You would just need to call and pay the tow company directly, then file a claim with your insurance company. Just keep those receipts. Trust me, as someone who’s been in this towing game for a while, it’s a much better experience than using a 3rd party roadside assistance company.
